Checking your car insurance policy

Taking out car insurance can be a bit of a minefield. Many people worry when setting up a new policy, as if you make once mistake, you may find that your car insurance policy is invalid and this often only comes to light when you go to make a claim. Not many people realise, but even just changing your wheels to alloys or adding a tow bar on to your vehicle can invalidate an insurance claim if you have not notified the company prior to the claim.

When you are setting up a policy online, if you are in any doubt of what it is asking you, then you may decide to call the company instead. If you need to ask them a question, then you could ask if they will put their answer on an email or in writing and be sure to make a record of the time and date of the call as well as the call handler’s name, should the calls be recorded and you need to have it listened back to.

One thing that people often forget to check is the amount of excess they have to pay. You may be tempted to just go with the cheapest policy but if the excess is a lot higher then this may not always be the best option. Another point to check, if this is something that is important to you, id that you are covered to drive any other vehicle. This often only occurs to the policy holder but some policies do not offer this at all.
